OneDrive Q & A

Q: So what is a "OneDrive"?

A: OneDrive is online storage space that is allocated to each member of staff and students from year 7 to 11. Onedrive allows them to store resources online in the "cloud".

Q: Why would I want to do that?

A: Where do you start!

  • OneDrive give you 1TB of space for your files (bigger than some laptop hard disks)
  • Allows you to share documents with colleagues and edit them together without the need to do the normal emailing back and forth of revisions. You can even edit them at the same time!
  • Allows you to view and edit documents just with a web browser, without needing Office to be installed
  • Allows you to access your files on a personal device via the Office applications
  • Open sync documents to mobile devices and edit or present them
  • Automatically create shared web links of your office documents - very useful for sharing resources with with students via the VLE or email.

Q: Sounds risky, won't my resources end up being viewable by anyone?

A: Nope, by default, all files uploaded are only viewable and controlled by you. You  can choose who you share your files with or if you create web links to them

Q: So I can get also my files on my phone and tablet?

A: Yes, you need to download:

  • "Office Mobile" or the Word, PowerPoint, Excel apps to view your files on a phone
  • "OneDrive for Business" allows you to navigate your files as you would in Windows Explorer

Once you have downloaded the apps from your devices app store, launch them and sign in with your school account

Q: Do I have to create new documents on OneDrive to get the extra features?

A: No, you can upload documents you created years ago and still share and collaborate on them

Q: How do I upload them?

A: Staff laptop with Windows 8.1 has a OneDrive folder that you can place files in to sync them to OneDrive, you can also drag and drop files into OneDrive via a web browser or save directly to OneDrive when saving in the Office application.
